Ancient Advice

Venus spake first to her:

“Shield not thy face, fair maid, but let him view thy swoon.

And, as the compass guides the sailor to his port,

so set thy legs to form a bay that leads him soon

to weep his joyous coming and, by such comfort lodged, ne’er seek another berth,

rather, probe deeper inland, tilling thy earth,

bathing in the shelter of thy cave

until the mighty chorus of thy songs shall calm the wind and make the waves behave.”
